iTerm2 is a free and open-source terminal emulator that has been the de-facto standard for Mac developers for over a decade. Built and maintained by George Nachman, it is a comprehensive replacement for Apple's default Terminal.app, packed with power-user features built up over years of community feedback.

Key Features

Split Panes – Divide your terminal window into multiple panes, each running an independent session, with intuitive keyboard navigation between them.
Profiles & Hotkey Window – Create multiple named profiles (e.g. different colors for SSH vs local) and summon a drop-down terminal from any app with a global hotkey.
Shell Integration – Deep hooks into zsh, bash, and fish that track your command history, current directory, and exit codes — enabling jump-to-directory, command history by directory, and more.
Triggers – Define regex patterns that fire automatic actions (highlight text, play a sound, run a script) when matched in terminal output.
Instant Replay – Rewind your terminal session frame-by-frame to see what was on screen at any past moment.
tmux Integration – Maps tmux sessions to native iTerm2 windows and tabs, so you get tmux persistence with a native Mac UI.
Paste History & Clipboard Manager – Access a searchable history of everything you've copied in the terminal.

Why Use iTerm2?

iTerm2 is the tool of choice for developers who have deeply customised their terminal workflow over many years. Its breadth of configuration options, large community, and robust SSH profile system make it hard to replace once you've invested in its ecosystem. It's also completely free and open-source with no accounts, no telemetry, and no subscriptions.
